Communication is the secret ingredient
Communication is all about influence. It’s the mantra I find myself repeating over and over again.
If you want to galvanise the energy and talents of your people towards a unifying vision – the secret ingredient will always be in the communication.
As Carmine Gallo says it beautifully in HBR:
“You can have the greatest idea in the world, but if you can’t persuade anyone else to follow your vision, your influence and impact will be greatly diminished.”
“You cannot over-invest in communication skills — written and oral skills,” says former PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi, who now serves on Amazon’s board. “If you cannot simplify a message and communicate it compellingly, believe me, you cannot get the masses to follow you.”
Have you carefully considered how you will engage and inspire your people in 2023?
If you don’t have a plan then you may find yourself with an inspiring vision but without a voice to project it deep and wide across your organisation.
“A mission statement that’s tucked in a drawer and largely forgotten does little to align teams around a common purpose.”
Here are 3 ideas you could implement this week in your organisation to spark interest in your vision:
1. Record a short video clip for your people where you passionately share your vision for 2023 and the impact you believe your team is capable of making.
2. Ask your immediate team for insights and feedback surrounding your organisational vision. Does it resonate with them on a practical level? What could we do better or differently to better align to our vision?
3. Make it a permanent part of your team meeting agenda. Overcommunicate your vision by talking about it outside the walls of your offsites or planning sessions. Allow it to become part of the way you do things and speak about things – ingrain it in your culture by giving it a voice.
These are just 3 of my quick tips for leaders….what would you add?
